Introduction
With the goal of restoring forest ecosystems and increasing timber production, China has reforested large areas in recent decades. Despite these efforts, timber production in the country remains very low. Increasing timber production, protecting biodiversity and improving climate change resilience requires sustainable management practices that address environmental, economic and also social impacts.
The Project
With the goal of restoring forest ecosystems and increasing timber production, China has reforested large areas in recent decades. Despite these efforts, timber production in the country remains very low. Increasing timber production, protecting biodiversity and improving climate change resilience requires sustainable management practices that address environmental, economic and also social impacts.
Project Objectives
- A site-specific SFMP is developed for Zhong Cun State Forestry Farm.
- Monitoring and control procedures of silvicultural measures are available.
- Staff are trained in SFMP development, implementation, and monitoring.
- Upscaling to other state forest farms is initiated, and the developed procedures show impact at the policy level.
Our Contribution
- Silvicultural planning for one forest beat and development of a comprehensive 10-year forest management plan for the whole Zhong Cun SFF
- GIS preparation for establishing the link between database & map server
- Integration of adequate forest protection measures for biotic and abiotic threats including forest fire management
- Integration of economic considerations, as well as of infrastructure planning
- Determination of an annual planning method considering the currently applied system and the project approach
- Forest resource assessments and forest planning inventory approaches
- Technical and administrative procedures to set-up FMPs
- Design and planning of forest infrastructure
- Monitoring and Control
Results & Successes
A forest inventory for the total area of the state forestry farm, as well as an assessment of the conservation value were carried out, and several guidelines were produced. Staff have been trained in both Germany and China. A forestry database for resource and management data is being developed. At the moment the SFMP is being completed with the topics forest economy and forest protection.
