Introduction

The rural area in Central Vietnam is characterized in large parts by production forests under different ownership types. The way these forests are managed has a huge impact for respective provinces, in terms of environmental stability, eco- logical richness and economic value. International cooperation projects and indi- vidual organizations have attempted to support the provinces in the adoption of SFM principles. However, the systematic and continuous support of the Central Vietnamese forestry sector, in the context of consulting, educational and training services on SFM and FC, requires additional forestry infrastructure.

The Project

The rural area in Central Vietnam is characterized in large parts by production forests under different ownership types. The way these forests are managed has a huge impact for respective provinces, in terms of environmental stability, eco- logical richness and economic value. International cooperation projects and indi- vidual organizations have attempted to support the provinces in the adoption of SFM principles. However, the systematic and continuous support of the Central Vietnamese forestry sector, in the context of consulting, educational and training services on SFM and FC, requires additional forestry infrastructure.

Project Objectives

  1. Build an economically sustained Training Center for Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Certification
  2. Offer capacity building and consulting services via the TC
  3. Implement a pilot study on improving the payment for environmental services scheme
  4. Develop a Nature, Environment and Sustainability program for school classes

Our Contribution

  • Improve the technical, didactic and operational skills of the Training Centre.
  • Support smallholders in adopting improved forest management practices.
  • Assist forest enterprises in the development of Sustainable Forest Management Plans and guidance in operating under forest certification schemes.
  • Pioneering science-based Nature, Environment, Sustainability (NES) education in Quang Tri province.
  • Networking and building of a marketing team of the TC.
  • Implementation and results sharing of study on SFM and PFES
  • Project planning and implementation, quality assurance, monitoring and internal evaluation.

Results & Successes

The PSFM2 project played a key role in building the Training Centre to support Central Vietnam in promoting SFM, forest certification and NES education. The TC staff, that increased to 15 trainers in total, improved their technical know- ledge and didactic skills over multiple years via Training of Trainer (ToT) work- shops and other capacity building events. Smallholders and other forest owner groups can now receive institutional support in improving their knowledge in fo- restry. A program to create an improved awareness of the interaction between nature and society, sustainability, biodiversity conservation, green sector care- ers and climate change among school classes via NES excursions can be offe- red. The TC constitutes a bridge that has the potential to translate forest political decisions into the rural sector of Central Vietnam. It can also function as a facili- tator for the implementation of development and research projects via its local staff, infrastructure and network. As the first of its kind in Vietnam, the TC can serve as a model approach that could be adopted on national scale.
