Introduction
Forests remain vital to the survival of Togo's rural population, but degradation of forest areas is continuing. The main drivers of forest degradation in Togo are the need for new agricultural land, mostly illegal logging for firewood and charcoal production, especially for Togo's urban areas, and unsustainable logging of timber. This also applies to the prefecture of Tchamba. The main actors in the prefecture are the regional environmental authority and its decentralised office in the prefecture, the community councils, village management committees around community forests, as well as local and migrant producers who are in permanent competition for access to cultivable land, and transhumance who regularly pass through the prefecture with their cattle herds. A relatively new phenomenon is that urban migrants are trying to establish large agricultural farms (plantations) with several hundred hectares.

Project Objectives
The overall objective of the project is to increase the implementation of measures for the restoration of forests and tree-rich productive landscapes (Forest Landscape Restoration [FLR]) in the Prefecture of Tchamba and the Central Region, by international, national and local actors.
It contributes to Togo’s voluntary commitment within the framework of the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100).
Our Contribution
- Implementation of forest landscape restoration with proven and scalable Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) measures
- Supporting realisation of agro-forestry with small-holder farmers
- Support to sustainable management of community forests
- Increasing the economic benefits of tree use and the documentation of land use rights by promoting forest-related value chains
- Planning, implementation, quality assurance, monitoring and internal evaluation of activities
- Organization and implementation of workshops and trainings
- Design, coordination and management of local grants
- Project management
- Value chain development
Results & Successes
The project has achieved remarkable successes, with Forest Landscape Restoration measures implemented across 1,170 hectares. These efforts have taken various forms, primarily through the establishment of agro- forestry systems in collaboration with small-holder farmers. These achievements reflect our commitment to sustainable land use and environmental stewardship, contributing to both ecological and economic benefits for the community
