Introduction

The project contributes to the protection and sustainable use and management of forests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa established under the Billion Tree Afforestation Project (BTAP) and the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Programme (10- BTTP) as part of the National Clean Green Pakistan Initiative and the Bonn Challenge. At the same time, the project is part of the Pakistan-German Climate & Energy Initiative financed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Project

The project contributes to the protection and sustainable use and management of forests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa established under the Billion Tree Afforestation Project (BTAP) and the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Programme (10- BTTP) as part of the National Clean Green Pakistan Initiative and the Bonn Challenge. At the same time, the project is part of the Pakistan-German Climate & Energy Initiative financed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Project Objectives

  • Focus on poor rural communities, small landowners and inclusion of informal users
  • Delegation of decision-making power to the local communities as forest owners and users
  • Improvement of women’s livelihoods and participation in lo- cal decision making
  • Consideration of land ownership in establishing of Village Land Use Plans, Village Plans and Partici- patory Forest Development Plans

Our Contribution

  • Participatory forest development planning and management
  • Development of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Systems for the Project
  • Livelihood development / value chain analysis, and support to women organisations in the establishment and operation of value chain entrepreneurial activities
  • Introduction of performance-based remuneration and deposit account systems for the forest wardens, nurseries and landowners
  • Support of the transfer from the current cash-based payment for beneficiaries to a bank transfer system meeting all transparency requirements
  • Development of an operational guideline for sustainable management of BTASP

Results & Successes

  • Comprehensive Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) concept finalized
  • Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) initiated for the choice of villages
  • Pilot Participatory Forest Development Planning (PFDP) started in two communities
